Getting a Childbirth Class Covered by Insurance

Did you know that you may be able to get your childbirth education class reimbursed by your health insurance? Here are three easy steps to figure out if you’re eligible and some other tips on affording prenatal classes.

Verify your Benefits

Call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask if your plan covers childbirth education, doula services or any other prenatal classes.

Also ask what is required to be reimbursed. Some insurance companies require the EIN number of the provider, a description of class, a receipt, etc. You also want to ask where to send it.

Sign Up for Class

If yes, they do cover class, then you can go ahead and sign up for our class and any other classes covered. See our prenatal classes here.

After registering, shoot an email to to request the documentation needed by your insurance company. We will send over an invoice with everything you need.

Get Reimbursed

Submit the paperwork and documentation to your insurance company and enjoy your refund!

Other Ways To Cover Prenatal Classes

Getting your childbirth class covered by insurance is not always available, but you might have some other avenues to get help.

  1. Flexible Spending Account or Health Savings Account. If your company offers this benefit, it is a great way to save money on certain out-of-pocket health care costs. Your company pulls money from your paycheck into an account, and you don’t pay taxes on this money. This means you’ll save an amount equal to the taxes you would have paid on the money you set aside. Often times childbirth classes and doula services are within in the eligible expenses covered in this benefit. Call the number on your FSA plan to double check!
  2. Add these services to your baby registry. Trust me when I say that you do not need all those newborn onesies coming your way. Instead, ask for postpartum services, birth support and prenatal education on your registry. A great place to facilitate that is through a cash fund on
  3. Budget and Save. Not as fun as the other options… but investing in your birth is arguably more important than many of the things under consideration, like the babymoon, the photoshoot, top-of-the-line stroller, and the snoo. No shade at all for people who prioritize those things. This is your time, and invest in the things that bring joy and ease. I will only preach one thing, entering your birth and postpartum with knowledge and intention will serve your very well in feeling empowered and prepared.
